<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This technique can be best understood if you imagine a combination of origami and dyeing. Although this method creates geometric pattern, the pattern looks quite organic with soft edges and rich coloring. And once you get hang of it, you realize there are endless possibility in the variations of patterns.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> Itajime method can be used for both cold and hot dye bath(depending on the dye you want to use). I used sumi ink and indigo dye on silk fabric. Sumi ink could be omitted if you want to use indigo dye only: simply skip Step#2 below. If you want to use either cotton or linen instead of silk, you may need to boil the fabric to remove glue and wax from the fabric before you dye. And soy milk needs to be applied onto cotton (or linen) as mordant before you dye it with sumi ink.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Supplies needed:Indigo dye bath (I used pre-reduced indigo crystals, available at dharmatrading.com)Sumi ink (available in art supply stores and online stores)silk crepe fabric (please make sure it’s pure silk)pair of wooden triangle (these can be handmade or can be purchased online by searching “itajime wooden pieces”)rubber bands or a small clampironpair of rubber gloves or disposable latex glovestimer or clock.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Choice of fabric: I recommend you avoid choosing blended fabric. This means you want to go with 100% silk. If you choose blended fabric, speckling effect will most likely occur. Additionally, for best result, you may want to choose a fabric that has not been bleached. Some fabric has optical brightener or bleach on it for whiter look. Choosing fabric with least waxy whiteness and with more off-white natural coloring will provide the best condition for dyeing.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Indigo dye bath: You can find a lot of information about preparing indigo dye bath online. Pre-reduced indigo crystal is relatively easy indigo dye to use. It is natural indigo dye reduced into crystal form (think freeze dry instant coffee). I personally choose to use this form of indigo because I do not have to use other chemicals when preparing the indigo bath. If you do not need to maintain an indigo bath for longer period of time, I recommend using indigo crystals to prepare the bath without any other chemicals. I like to use warm to hot water to make the indigo bath. You want to make sure dye bath is well stirred and all the crystals melted in the water. It is best if you prepare the indigo bath about 1 hour before you start dyeing. You want to avoid oxidation of the bath by preparing the bath too early.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Step 1:Using hot water and PH neutral detergent, presoak and wash & rinse the silk fabric. This will remove any surface dirt or oil/wax which can prevent dyes to penetrating the fabric.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Step 2: prepare sumi ink bath by mixing 2 parts sumi ink and 1 part water. This ratio can be adjusted depending the desired darkness of gray. Submerge silk fabric and move it around to make sure all the surface of silk is coated. Squeeze out the excess dye, rinse and hang dry. This dye bath can be used again for a week or so – make sure you keep it in a cool place.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Step 3: If fabric is wrinkled, quickly iron it in medium heat setting. Carefully fold the fabric as shown below. Picture number one shows accordion fold. Use iron to flatten the fabric between each steps if needed. Sandwich folded fabric between wooden pieces and bundle it tightly using either rubber bands or clamp. The wooden pieces I used had grooves on each corners of the triangle, making it easy for rubber bands to hold the bundle. If you have home made wooden pieces without the grooves, you may want to use the clamp to tightly sandwich the fabric.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Step 7: After one minute in dye bath, take the bundle out and gently squeeze the excess dye. While bundle is outside the indigo bath, you want to gently massage and carefully open folds (only on exposed area of bundle, do not open the bundle yet). This is to introduce oxygen onto the surface of the fabric. The oxidation of the indigo is what makes the indigo turn blue and to stick to the fabric – so this is an important part of the dyeing. Once all exposed area is carefully opened, leave the bundle at a well ventilated area, preferable in natural daylight. Leave the bundle out at least for 3 minutes or longer. Submerge the bundle again for 1 minute, take out, massage. Let it rest for 3 minutes. You can repeat this process 3 to 10 times depending on desired intensity of the indigo. I dipped my fabric five times to get medium-light shade of indigo.

Gently rinse in running water for 30 seconds to a minute. Take the bundle out, squeeze out water gently, let it drip dry until dripping stops. Open and unfurl the fabric. Let the fabric hang dry(preferably in natural light).

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Step 9: Wait at least 24 hours then wash the fabric in cool water with gentle detergent. If you are hand washing the fabric, avoid soaking, rubbing or wringing the silk. Use gentle cycle if you use washing machine. I like to use splash of white vinegar in final rinse to get all the soap out of silk. <span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Past weekend, I wanted to try my hand in dyeing with dandelion. So I went to local city park to gather some dandelions. I read dandelion yield dye better when fresh, so I jumped right into making dye bath as soon as I came back home. I weighed the dye stuff first(mostly flowers, some stems). The weight of dye stuff will give you rough idea of how much fabric you can dye with it. Every batch of natural dye will come out differently and it's very difficult to predict the degree of saturation. But I would say ratio of 2 to 1(two being the weight of the dye stuff, and one being the weight of the fabric) would be good enough for the color I would like to achieve.
Water and the dandelion goes into the pot and then the mixture get boiled for about an hour. While the pot boiled, I prepared the fabric I want to dye. The silk (crepe de chine, heavier weight) was washed thoroughly and kept soaking in the water. When the dye stuff had done boiling for an hour, you filter the dye stuff to yield the dye liquid. You can keep the filtered dye stuff aside for later use(I will come back to this later).

<span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">Wet silk went into the dye liquid and pot simmered for an hour on the stovetop. Roaring boil, I was told, would reduce the natural luster of silk fabric, so I avoided boiling the silk and kept the temperature to simmer. After an hour of simmering, I let the silk cool in the dye bath for a few hours. In a separate pot, I prepare a mordant bath.

<span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">

<span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Natural dye often fades quickly and in most cases colors are not light fast. And mordant acts as a color fixer making color more permanent. "Alum" is mordant I use with most of my botanical dyeing. It is non-toxic unlike number of other mordants used for natural dyeing. Cream of tar tar(available in grocery store) can be used as an assisting agent to the mordant. In the pot, I mix in two spoonful of alum and a spoonful of cream of tar tar in the water. I put the silk into the mixture and simmer for an hour. Mordanting can be done before or after the dye bath process, but it could also be done in-between, as it was done in this case.

<span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">

<span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">Once the mixture have simmered for an hour, I transfer the silk back into the dye bath. The filtered dye stuff was put into a polyester mesh pocket then dropped into the dye bath pot along with the silk. I let that simmer for an hour again. So I used the dye bath twice, before and after the mordanting. After the second round of dye bath simmering, I left the silk in the dye bath to cool overnight. This step may not make too much difference to the results in this case, but longer time in dye bath often yield deeper color with other tannin rich dye bath(such as bark or leaf base dyes). Toward the end of the dye bath simmering, I threw in some iron rust liquid. Rust acts as modifier, and it pushes the color into more reddish or somber looking tone.

Just outside the palace grounds is a well known temple which name escapes me. Buddha's birthday had already passed, but colorful wish lanterns were still decorating the temple grounds. White lanterns are memorial wish lanterns for deceased and the colored ones are for living. Lanterns will be taken down about a month after the celebration day.
On a slightly different note, the ultra modern convention complex designed by Zaha Hadid provides impressive night view. It's big, curvy and looks quite impractical. I didn't have time to go inside, but would like to see it from inside next time. He would spin silk threads then dye the skein with a brew of plum trees branches gathered from the mountain behind his house. After days of toiling at century old loom, TV documentary explained, piece of silk was hand woven. Viola! A pretty co-host of the documentary appeared in a peachy pink silk kimono showing off the final product of the whole process.

Fast forward to 2013, I found myself meeting the man in the documentary. Bryan Whitehead is a Canadian expat who's been living and working as textile artist, silk, indigo and tea farmer in Japan for last 25 years. It was a bit surreal to be at Bryan's old silk farm house I saw on that TV program.

By this time, I had been working exclusively with silk for 3 years. I wanted to see where silk comes from, and how it was produced. All silk, wether coming from industrialized mills or from smaller scale farm like Bryan's starts with silk worm and cocoons. I knew from reading books and watching Youtube videos about silk production in macro or in micro scale. During my stay at Bryan's silk farm house back in 2013, I got to reel silk threads from cocoons, work with indigo vat and tried my hand in weaving with old Japanese loom.

Early this month, I spent a week back at the farmhouse watching the silkworms slowly turning into cocoons. Silk worms are tender to touch and slow to move. But they're eating machines, devouring massive amounts of mulberry leaves in order to grow fast. It takes only about 45 days for an egg to develop into a fully grown moth.

I arrived at the farmhouse when worms were almost fully grown- they are at their last week of binge eating before they start to encase themselves in cocoons. I helped Bryan to collect bagful of mulberry leaves from his mulberry field. We fed silkworms three times a day. At their full size, they are about size of my pinky finger. Suddenly they stop eating, and each worm instinctually looks for a place to settle and make a cocoon. "Mabushi" is a kind of grid structure designed as cocoon apartments. Silkworms find his own niche in mabushi and spend a day making cocoon. Thin, delicate yet strong silk thread combined with waxy glue comes out of worm's mouth and the worm slowly encase itself in layers of this thread - which eventually becomes a cocoon.

It's an impressive sight. And it's hard to believe every single square inches of my silk clothes comes from (mouth of) these creatures.

It took sometime for me to get there, but I think it was important for me to see the origin of the material I work with day-in and day-out. As if by osmosis, I think I will be more respectful of the material just by having being present during the process of silk-making by the original silk makers.
Second session of indigo workshop took place past weekend with invited teacher, Bryan Whitehead. Bryan was also my teacher when I traveled to study at his indigo farm in Fujino, Japan. With 25 years of silk worm & indigo farming under his belt, Bryan is an excellent teacher. We were lucky to have him for the first time in New York this year. All the attendees for this workshop made beautiful pieces during the workshop. Gil, Ann, Blakely, Judy and Hisami, thank you for sharing your weekend with us! Our special thanks to Kevin at BKLYN Curated for hosting the workshop at his backyard.

My partner and I have launched a new website, put on an exhibition, started a few collaborations and finished editing some videos. It's been challenging at times, but very worthwhile. We just wrapped up the exhibition last night. I am looking forward catching up on some other projects and tying up some loose ends. I hope for fruitful summer.

Recently I received a boxful of knit from Japan. Woven with hemp and dyed with soot ink and indigo, knitted scarf's color came out subdued french blue. It was woven in Japan with an old 1950's sock knitting machine which originated from Brooklyn, NY. Machines were almost retired, but recently brought back from the retirements by Bryan, who runs Fujino indigo workshop in Japan.

These knits have shredded look, full of holes of irregular sizes. Fiber has body and it breaths, so it will make a great transition season scarf.

It was a warm and sunny day out yesterday, so I took the scarf out for a test drive. My husband was there to take some photos with a neighborhood graffiti as a backdrop. We often forget colors and light are one and the same. A thing of certain color is a thing which is infused or saturated with certain frequency of light while reflecting the frequency eyes can pick up. It's an idea easily understood, but is not an easy idea to demonstrate. Dyes in transparent containers or on semi transparent silk seems to be the most straight forward method.

For hundreds of years, Fujino was home to families rearing silk worms and spinning silk thread from cocoons. It's a gorgeous place, behind layers of mountains(and fog on this particular day). But it is surprisingly close from the bustle of metropolis, about one and half hours outside central Tokyo. Steep slopes were cultivated to farm tea shrubs and mulberry bushes were grown to feed hungry silk worms.
Bryan does everything the old fashioned way, no matter how time consuming it might be. This means raising his own silk worms, growing and harvesting mulberry shrubs to feed the worms, spinning silk from cocoons, growing and fermenting his own indigo. Spun silk is dyed and woven into fabrics using one of the traditional looms stationed at his farmhouse.
While staying at the farmhouse, I saw a few huge moths flying in and around the house. Maybe that seems to be the case since I live in an area of Brooklyn where majority of the residents are under 30 years old. I see a lot of legs, in different sizes and shapes. It's season for tights, and I've been dyeing more tights than I'd like to admit. Ombre tights can really accent your wardrobe in an unexpected way. There will be a plenty of black outfits, as is always in NYC. Well placed splash of color in form of an ombre tights can complete a look.
I like to over dye these tights so they have full-on colors, as if colors are painted on the legs.

When tights are stretched over legs, colors tend to get diluted. To prevent watered down hues, I use higher denier tights so the colors do not loose the saturation when tights are worn. I worn them since last year, and found them to be very comfortable even on my overly sensitive skin. And quite amazingly they virtually NEVER run. I had an experience where a nail head sticking out from side of a table caught and made a tiny hole on my tights. I went about a day thinking the hole will grow larger. But it never got bigger from its original size. I've washed them a few times since, but the hole never ran. I don't know how they weave these tights these days, but they are pretty amazing. I tried out a few manufacturers' tights, but I decided on one manufacturer - they are located in North Carolina, and makes reliable products. And I have been using their tights to produce my line of ombre tights. I put in a lot of time dyeing each tights, so I want to make sure they will last.

Bryan, the textile artist has been teaching and sharing his knowledge in silk production, silk worm rearing, weaving and traditional Japanese textile art. It was really very moving. I hope this movie will enable to these artist to gain wider audiences for their art and dedication. They are friends of my long time friends. Although I was aware of his historic "boxing"performance, I never had the privilage of meeting them in person. I hope I will get to meet them some day.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998503737182549756.post-443824990233932802013-08-24T08:18:00.000-07:002013-08-24T09:26:00.553-07:00Charles Pollock

They are gorgeous creatures and the large and detailed photos are pretty spectacular.
It occurred to me that it's no accident that silk comes from the cocoon of a moth.
This is Bombyx Mori, otherwise known as domesticated silkmoth. The caterpillar of this kind of moth feeds on mulberry leaves, then turns into a white cocoon. Cocoons are harvested, processed and spun into silk thread, then woven into silk fabric.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998503737182549756.post-25304009221498084002013-05-21T18:43:00.000-07:002013-05-21T18:43:05.006-07:00Christening

A few months ago, I was invited to write an article for Altered Couture, a magazine for DIYers. It was featured on 4 page spread on its Winter 2012 issue, published in November. The article shows step-by-step instruction on how to paint and dye silk. Altered Couture has other great articles featuring wonderful ways to repurpose and reform articles of underused clothings into an unique and wearable fashion. Altered Couture can be found in many major craft supply shops and Barnes and Noble Bookstores.

The term "slow fashion" is a contradiction in itself. Trend changes every season. Yet I strive to create a garment that can be worn for a long time. As a designer, there always are temptations to produce in greater number of on-trend garments. That means hiring others to divide ever growing tasks and responsibilities, and it also means hiring oversea factories to mass produce.

For me, a hand crafted garment means the direct connection between the wearer and the hands of maker. There are enough mass produced garments which can be discarded after the trend passes and I do not feel the need to add to that paradigm.

As with all of my wardrobe, my favorite pieces are ones that make me feel good, ones that share memories with me. More care and the time I spend in a garment, the more endearing it becomes to me. And I hope to make that kind of garments for others.

Since I mix dyes to create various hues in silk, I feel as though pairing colors are not just about visual aesthetics or visual editing, but it's also about being in tune with the color itself. When I have made a prototype garment from the silk I've dyed, I usually like to take it out for a test drive. I wear it(or have someone wear it) for a day. I like to see how the look of the colors of the garment shift under different ambient lights, indoor or out. If I am wearing the prototype, I get the feeling of how the color "performs", meaning how it might effect my mood or my sense or well being.
When choosing certain colors to wear, we are often told one should wear certain color or pattern to compliment one's skin tone or body shape. I also would add it's also important to choose the color that makes you feel certain way.
One of my high school art teacher taught me that each color have its own "frequency", an invisible vibrating ray emitting from everything with color. Understanding that colors are more than what one perceive with eyes was an epiphany.

A few days ago, I had a visitor staying with me. I had her in one of my prototype and we went out for a breakfast at local bistro. It was a sunny and warm day, and I took some photos of her in my new creation. A passerby stopped us and complimented the garment. It was like a cherry on the top of a beautiful day!
